The Follow-Up Most People Forget

How a simple thank you letter turned persistence into connection

Last week I told you about Lamar, the trash truck driver who finally came through with that epic bag of goodies for my son.

A hat. Coloring book. Wristbands. Even a tour invite.

Lincoln was over the moon.

So, the saga continues!

The same week, my son sat down at the kitchen table and wrote Lamar a letter (with my wife’s help) :)

A young 3 years old’s way of saying thank you.

Annnnddd we made it our mission to deliver it even thought we didn’t “have to.”

Most parents would’ve let the buck stop there and the moment evaporate after that triumphant day hehe.

However, we knew this wasn’t the end of the story, it was the beginning of a bond.

A great lesson to teach our young son and lead by example…

It’s now Sunday again the 14th, a couple of days ago, so we pulled up, parked, questioned if we already missed him…waited, drove around some more, parked again…

And then!

Big Blue Truck drove by and pulled in!

We followed him.

He drove by us, honked his horn, and shouted out of his window, “I gotta turn around, someone was in my way” (he needed to get that dumpster)

I said back to him, “we brought you a gift, a card…”

We pulled up a few feet, the three of us got out of the car and handed him the letter.

The look on his face said it all, shock, appreciation, joy.

Said he was going to hang it up at the office location…

Lincoln got to honk the horn, we got a mini masterclass on the big beautiful truck, it was quite neat, didn’t ever think a trash truck would fascinate me so much!

In that moment, in that moment…follow-up went from persistence to next level connection.

Here’s the Sales Lesson…

Follow up is more than getting it’s about giving too.

The genuine power is when you bring value, gratitude, or do it because it’s the humane thing to do.

Want to go from being forgotten to being remembered?

From being “just another salesperson” to being the one they trust?

Persistence will win attention it’s the gratitude that cements the relationship.

Whether it’s a prospect, a client, or a trash truck driver named Lamar.

The ones who keep showing up with value and thanks, those are the people you never forget.

See you next week Follow Up Fam!
